JEE Main Percentile vs Rank: The Maths, Explained Simply

Every JEE Main result season, the same confusion appears in our Bhiwadi classrooms: “Sir, I got 98.6 percentile — what rank is that?” Here is the complete picture, without jargon.

Percentile is not marks

Your percentile tells you what fraction of candidates scored below you. A 98.60 percentile means roughly 98.6% of all candidates who appeared scored less than you. It says nothing about marks out of 300 — a 98.6 percentile in one shift and another shift may correspond to different marks, which is exactly why NTA normalises using percentile.

The rank formula

The relationship between percentile and All India Rank is straightforward:

Expected Rank ≈ (100 − Percentile) ÷ 100 × Total candidates

Worked examples (assuming ~15,00,000 candidates, typical for recent JEE Mains):

• 99.50 percentile → (0.5 ÷ 100) × 15,00,000 ≈ 7,500
• 98.60 percentile → (1.4 ÷ 100) × 15,00,000 ≈ 21,000
• 95.00 percentile → (5 ÷ 100) × 15,00,000 ≈ 75,000

Why the rank bands matter more than the number

Roughly (and it varies year to year):

• Top ~1,000 → IITs with branch choice (after JEE Advanced)
• ~10,000 → IITs / top NITs for CSE-adjacent branches
• ~50,000 → NITs, IIITs and GFTIs
• ~1,50,000 → lower NITs, GFTIs and good state colleges

What this means for your preparation
